The Dallas Cowboys enjoyed a bye in Week 7, a timely reward for their hard-fought victory over the Los Angeles Chargers the previous week — a win that saw them improve to 4-2 on the 2023 season. But in order to catch the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East, more firepower may be required.
The Cowboys are often a fixture in trade rumors, and Dallas is only a few months removed from pulling off trades for wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore — not to mention a dramatic swoop for former top-three pick Trey Lance, the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott. However, owner Jerry Jones does not plan to repeat that same aggressiveness ahead of the NFL‘s trade deadline next Tuesday.
A departure from the offseason strategy
During his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan sports radio, Jones remarked that any trade proposal would have to come from another team, as the Cowboys are content with what they have.
“You have a lot of machinations that you’re working with every day. I do. But the initiation of an opportunity to make a trade at this time that would help us principally has to start over on the other end,” Jones said. “And so that’s not showing a lack of aggressiveness, that’s just where it starts.”
Dallas reportedly has been eyeing additional depth at tight end, but rumors that the Cowboys would swing a deal for Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts have been laughed off in Atlanta. And with the Cowboys sporting a top-five scoring offense in addition to a top-five scoring defense, Jones has every reason to be pleased with the state of his squad despite a season-ending injury to star cornerback Trevon Diggs.
I like where we are with our personnel today. And so I’m not thinking in any way that we need to upgrade our roster.

A negotiating tactic from Jones?
Of course, Jones is no stranger to the blockbuster trade — and executives around the NFL are wondering whether the Cowboys‘ longtime owner has a card still to play up his sleeve.
Jones may have a newfound sense of urgency after seeing the 6-1 Eagles land star safety Kevin Byard earlier this week, parting with relatively little in the way of assets to acquire the two-time All-Pro selection.
All will become clear in advance of the Oct. 31 deadline — but for now, the party line out of Arlington appears to be silence, or a wait-and-see approach at the very least.
