Josh Allen has turned into a one-man army as a quarterback in the NFL. He’s gone from a chaotic turnover-machine into a surgeon who can dice defenses up through the air and on the ground.

When he chooses to run the football, Allen generally likes to dish out punishment. While fans love the violent play style, Buffalo Bills coaches most likely cringe and pray whenever Allen takes a hit. The coaches aren’t alone there, as Tom Brady is also one of those who would like to see Allen avoid hits more consistently.

Tom Brady tells Josh Allen to “f***ing slide”

On his Let’s Go! podcast, the seven-time Super Bowl winner – along with Jim Gray – was joined by Allen on the show. Gray prompted Brady to give Allen his advice on when he runs the ball, and Brady didn’t mince words, saying he needs to be more careful.

I would love to see Josh save those for very special moments and special occasions to run the ball rather than to run the ball six minutes into the game on a 2nd-and-6. Not that he shouldn’t run, but when he does run, f***ing slide and make sure no one hits you because I don’t want to see him ever get hurt and I want to see him out there playing every week because he’s such a f***ing stud. He’s got to evolve his thinking a little bit, just to be a little smarter.

Allen followed up with a response to Brady’s comments, agreeing with Brady’s general point but also explaining that he plays a risky style of football to win games for his hard-working teammates who would do the same.

He is right, I’m not saying that he’s wrong, but you could get hurt in the pocket just as much as you can outside the pocket. That’s the only caveat that I have for that. You gotta go win a football game and sometimes that calls upon me doing something like putting my body on the line for my teammates because of how much I do love my teammates and how much I see them working their tails off too. That’s where the flip for me is so hard to turn off because I just care so much about winning football games and sometimes it does cause the risk to be a little bit higher than maybe even the reward.

Brady compared Allen to his eldest son, mentioning that he’s going to do it his way no matter what. The former Patriot finally conceded that it’s all about “mitigating risk“, which is something Allen mentioned as well.

To be fair to Allen, his running numbers are way down this season compared to his first five seasons. He’s on pace to rush only 76-77 times this year. He had at least 102 rush attempts in each of the past four seasons, and would have easily gotten there in his rookie season if it wasn’t for injury.

It’s clear Allen and the Bills coaching staff are trying to keep him out of harm’s way as much as possible. Still, no one will stop him from trying to run through defenders when given the opportunity.
