Matthew Perry Foundation formed to help people battling addiction – MARCA.com

A foundation has been established in Matthew Perry‘s name, following his death at his home in Pacific Palisades, California, with the purpose of aiming to help other people who are battling substance abuse and addiction.

It honors Perry’s desired legacy as he didn’t want to be remembered for his role in Friends but for the work he did to beat his own addictions and the work he did to help others overcome their own, after he made that desire known in 2022.

He was found dead at his home in Los Angeles after drowning in his hot tub, with a passerby attempting to rescue his already dead body. A ‘water emergency’ was declared and EMTs rushed to the property but to no avail and he was later withdrawn from the site by the Los Angeles County Coroner.

“In the spirit of Matthew Perry‘s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction, we embark on a journey to honor his legacy by establishing the Matthew Perry Foundation, guided by his own words and experiences, and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible,” reads the foundation’s statement.

Perry is known for his role as Chandler Bing on the sitcom ‘Friends’, which ran from 1994-2004, becoming one of the show’s most popular characters due to his sarcastic tones and smart remarks.

“I got out of prison and when I got to Los Angeles, Matt put his arm around me immediately,” Leaf explained during his podcast. “He carried me for like, the first six months probably in Los Angeles, trying to learn how to be a sober person really in a public platform.

“I don’t know if I’m here right now, being able to do stuff like this – or anything – if it weren’t for him, and him sharing his story and making me understand that you can be a guy in the public eye that everyone knows and still be sober, be humble and be about helping other people.”
