Backstory
Malone is the latest trendsetter in NBA coaching deals.
Monty Williams agreed to a lucrative six-year, $78.5 million deal to become the Detroit Pistons’ coach in the spring. The deal has a team option for the seventh and eighth years of the deal and could reach close to $100 million in totality with incentives, league sources said.
Williams’ contract, the highest ever given to an NBA coach, was followed by Gregg Popovich’s extension in July. Popovich signed a five-year contract extension, worth more than $80 million, an average annual value of about $16 million, according to Yahoo Sports.
Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra is under contract through 2024. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr is in the final year of his deal with the team, which he led to a title in 2015, 2017 and 2022. If Kerr coaches past this season, and Spoelstra the next, their future deals are sure to play their part in resetting the NBA coaches market.
