The Islander Sports Report: Coronado Girls’ Tennis – Coronado Eagle & Journal

For the Coronado Islander girls’ tennis team, 2023 has been a season to remember. A 10+ win regular season, a runner-up finish in their league play, and a second-place finish in the team portion of the CIF DII playoffs.

Everything was and has been turning up Islanders. However, for some select members of the Islander tennis team, the 2023 season wasn’t quite over. While team play had concluded, the CIF individual playoffs were still yet to be played.

In total, Coronado had three players qualify for CIF individuals. In singles, the lone Islander representative would be freshman Madison Brown.

In just her first season as an Islander, Brown proved to be a force on the court, often being leaned on to pick up critical points for Coronado in the singles lines. And while for some, that task may have shaken them, Brown would more often than not rise to the occasion.

Meanwhile, earning a spot in the doubles bracket would be the pairing of Grace Elardo and Maria Anaya. The young doubles pairing was the definition of dominance in both the regular season and during CIF team play. They oftentimes would blank their opponents 6-0 thanks in large part to the court coverage and strong on-service play.

However, in the individual portion of CIF, things would not shake out as these Islanders would hope.

In singles, Brown would fall in the first round to her opponent, Sofia Echeverria of Mission Hills High School, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. While in doubles, the pairing of Elardo and Anaya would fare about the same as the duo would also fall in their opening round match 6-2, 6-2 to their doubles opponents from Mater Dei Catholic.

While it was not the deep run that these Islanders were perhaps looking forward to, it is still something that all three of these Islanders can use to build upon as they look forward to their next season.
