Earlier this week on “Pardon My Take,”Charissa Thompson, renowned sports broadcaster and sideline reporter, admitted to occasionally “making up” halftime and in-game reports when coaches weren’t available for interviews.
This revelation has ignited a firestorm of controversy, and USA TODAY is taking a bold stance, calling for Thompson’s termination.
Thompson, who has since expressed regret for her choice of words, emphasized that in the absence of direct information from coaches, she would use insights gained during the first half to craft her reports.
Despite her apology, USA TODAY columnist Mike Freeman is resolute in his call for Thompson’s firing, asserting that her actions, given her extensive experience, are a clear violation and warrant severe consequences.
Thompson’s apology not enough
Thompson’s mea culpa has not placated USA TODAY, and Freeman argues, “There’s no way Thompson, who has been doing this for more than a decade and knows better, should survive this. This is a firing offense. It’s not even close.”
Despite the controversy, Thompson continues to be on air, contributing as host to Amazon Prime’s Thursday night broadcasts and expected to fulfill her Fox Sports duties on Sunday morning.
This has only fueled the debate surrounding the ethical standards expected from sports broadcasters.
Thompson’s revelation isn’t isolated, as it was in 2022, during an episode of her podcast “Calm Down” with Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews that she first admitted to fabricating sideline reports.
Thompson said then: “I was like, ‘Oh coach, what adjustments are you gonna make at halftime?’ He goes, ‘That’s a great perfume you’re wearing,'”
“I was like, ‘Oh (expletive), this isn’t gonna work.’ I’m not kidding, I made up a report.”
Andrews, too, admitted to similar actions.
The fallout extends beyond the individuals involved, raising questions about the integrity of sideline reporting in the sports industry, specifically in the NFL.
Colleagues weigh in on Thompson’s comments
The public response to these admissions has been mixed.
While some, like ESPN reporter Lisa Salters, express shock, disappointment, and disgust, others, including The Athletic reporter Chris Kirschner, emphasize the damage such actions cause to the credibility of the media, particularly those who take their roles seriously.
Kirschner’s comments said “A good portion of the public doesn’t trust the media as is. I cannot believe she would proudly admit this. This causes significant harm to the people who actually take the job seriously. It’s entirely unethical and worthy of never working in the field again.”
