Germany keen to bounce back against Austria – Bundesliga
The Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna is the setting on Tuesday as Julian Nagelsmann looks to return to winning ways at the beginning of his tenure as Germany coach.
Latest
Germany were defeated in Nagelsmann‘s maiden match on home soil since taking the reins of the national team as they were beaten 3-2 by Turkey at the weekend. They started well in Berlin as former Bayer Leverkusen man Kai Havertz gave the hosts the lead on five minutes but the game was turned on its head by two quick goals from the visitors before Niclas Füllkrug levelled after the break. A late penalty then saw Nagelsmann suffer his first loss. Regardless of the result, it was a memorable night for debutant Marvin Ducksch and both Janis Blaswich and Grischa Prömel will be hoping to earn their first senior caps in Vienna. Havertz started at left-back against Turkey, where RB Leipzig‘s David Raum is a more traditional opton and who could come into the team, while Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller are pushing for starts as the UEFA Euro 2024 hosts continue their preparations for next summer’s footballing festival.
There are a raft of familiar faces in the Austria camp, with former Leipzig supremo Ralf Rangnick leading the charge for this week’s home nation. There are no fewer than 12 Austrian players currently representing Bundesliga sides, and the likes of Konrad Laimer and Marcel Sabitzer were among eight German-based players in the starting XI when Austria beat Estonia 2-0 last Thursday. Former Bayern hero David Alaba captained the team in that match, while substitute appearances from Florian Kainz and Romano Schmid made it 10 current Bundesliga players to feature in that victory. German football fans will also recognise Marko Arnautović, Kevin Danso and Sasa Kalajdzic as former Bundesliga players in the squad.

A result away at a strong Austrian side would surely be the perfect tonic though with EURO 2024 moving ever closer onto the horizon. Rangnick has created quite the feelgood atmosphere around the Austrian national team since taking charge in May of last year. Their 2-0 win over Estonia on Thursday saw the Austrians into second place at the end of their EURO 2024 qualifying group – and they will be in Germany for the big party next summer. © imago images Thank you for joining us for live updates ahead of and during the Austria v Germany friendly international in Vienna on Tuesday evening.Füllkrug keeps finding the net
