Ratings: Griezmann strike guides Atlético to a nervy win over Mallorca – Into the Calderon

Oblak

Didn’t have much to do between the sticks for most of the match. Stopped a left-footed Giovanni González volley in the second half and was fortunate that Amath Ndiaye’s late chance rolled wide. 5

Azpilicueta

From the opening minutes, the veteran defender was able to bring the ball into advanced positions. His impact on the match grew as time went on — the 34-year-old was seen lobbing passes into dangerous areas and creating chances for Álvaro Morata and Ángel Correa. 6.5

Llorente

Brought his blistering pace on both ends of the ball, whether tracking back for an interception or hustling forward to receive a pass. Was unable to break down defenders and win the endline like he normally looks to do, as he spent the full 90 minutes covering at right wing-back for the rested Nahuel Molina. 5

Witsel

Ended the match with three tackles and an interception. The defender’s anticipation and positioning were helpful in sweeping up any half-chances for Mallorca, although his lack of pace was exposed when the game opened up in the final 20 minutes. 5.5

Hermoso

Had an appeal for a penalty in the first half, but it fell on deaf ears. The Spaniard took his chances on the ball, frequently looking to skip a pass into attacker. No better example of this than his assist to Antoine Griezmann in the 64th minute. 7

Lino

Took on players out wide with success, creating space for cutbacks or a low cross in the box. He was slippery, and for much of the match the one player who could destabilize the disciplined Mallorca defense. 6.5

Koke

Made his 600th (yes, six-hundredth) appearance in all competitions for Atlético Madrid’s first team. Koke actively sought after the ball for quick passes forward, helping Atlético maintain a gaudy 68 percent possession figure. He was subbed off for Rodrigo de Paul in the 63rd minute. 5.5

Griezmann

Slotted in a deeper position initially, the 32-year-old looked to set up attacks early on, but he was not on the same page as his teammates. Took a more direct approach in the second half, scoring his 13th goal of the season (ninth in LaLiga) with a thumping header past Predrag Rajković. The goal, his 170th as an Atlético player, moved him into second place on the club’s all-time scoring list past Adrián Escudero. 7

Barrios

Dynamic and confident on the ball. The 20-year-old took 96 touches and completed seven dribbles — six in the first 30 minutes. He dominated the match as an interior and demonstrated the mental and physical acumen to play the final half-hour as a pivot. 7

Correa

Got the start up top, but unable to utilize the dribbling and elusiveness that typically defines his performances. Had a chance to score from a César Azpilicueta ball into the box, but he shot it wide. 4.5

Morata

Caught offside twice and recorded just one shot on target. Frustrating performance. 4.5

De Paul

The Argentine replaced Koke and added what Atlético lost by moving Pablo Barrios to the base of midfield. He drove the ball and was fouled twice. 5

Riquelme

The youth product was eager to move up the pitch and pressure Mallorca’s backline. Samuel Lino’s defensive work was better, but Riquelme made quick decisions on the ball to try to spark a second goal. 5

Saúl

Subbed on for Lino with 20 minutes left. Floated forward when he could, adding an extra option in the attack. Made two clearances in defense. 5

Memphis

His first appearance in two months. Had a look at goal in second-half stoppage time after a quick turn on the ball, but he lost his footing and couldn’t get the shot on target. 5

Giménez

Added some energy to the defense in the final minutes. Finished the game with the clean sheet. 5
