St. Louis grandfather furious after grandson robbed of designer tennis shoes – KSDK

“I’m upset about it all. My grandson could have been shot or killed over some tennis shoes. It’s crazy,” said Calvin Clifton.

ST. LOUIS — “I’m upset about it all. It makes no sense. Nothing like that has ever happened to him,” said Calvin Clifton.

The furious grandfather is still shaking his head after what happened to his 13-year-old grandson.

“If he can’t wear what he wants to wear then it’s crazy,” Clifton said on Friday.

His grandson told St. Louis police Monday afternoon that he got off his school bus on Greer Avenue and walked towards the intersection of Sullivan and Vandeventer Avenue when 10 teenagers approached him and asked if he wanted to buy some marijuana.

“He said no and they said give it up,” said the boy’s grandfather.

Calvin Clifton says one of the teenagers pointed a gun at his grandson’s chest.

Another boy aimed a gun at the seventh grader’s side.

‘I’m just so thankful that my grandson was not hurt. That’s the thing, he said I’m glad I didn’t get shot,” Clifton said.

The young robbers stole the middle-schooler’s $700 Balenciaga tennis shoes, his designer belt and his book bag.

Clifton said his grandson is an only child, loves footballs and his aunt bought the sneakers for him for being a good kid.

“He is a smart, typical kid. That’s what peeved me the most that my grandson had no shoes on when he made it home. They robbed him of his shoes and other things at three o’clock in the afternoon,” said Clifton.

The terrified teen ran for his life.

“He ran, but he said a guy gave him a ride to the corner and he told the guy to let him out because they were following him.”

“Innocent kid just trying to walk home,” said Pastor Gregory Purnell.

The callous crime happened near Purnell’s church.

He has a message for the 13-year-old.

“Keep your head up. Keep doing the right thing. Keep going to school,” Purnell said.

The boy’s mother didn’t want to talk on camera.

She told 5 On Your Side’s Robert Townsend her son is still traumatized by all this and will be undergoing counseling.

Police have not made any arrests in the armed robbery.
