Brewster NJROTC mission includes service to country, responsibility – The Journal News

A school year is 180 days, with no two days and no two schools exactly alike. The students differ, the teachers differ, school cultures differ. Here, our photographers find what makes our school days anything but ordinary, the people and programs and events that make a difference, school day in and school day out.

The Brewster High School NJROTC program won first place recently at the annual SUNY Maritime Drill Meet — the first time in over 20 years.

At the Bethel Drill Meet, the cadets racked up another win with 1st place NS1 color guard, 1st place NS1 drill, 3rd place NS1 overall, 1st place senior overall, 1st place senior armed drill, 1st place orienteering and 2nd place PT (physical training.)

That means that for the first time since the 1990s, Brewster NJROTC qualified for a spot to compete in the NJROTC Area 4 Championships.

Brewster NJROTC commanding officer Jarrid Bryggman leads the cadets into the high school gym for the Pass and Review parade Nov. 2.

“I like the NJROTC at Brewster because it’s a mixed bag of people, we have band geeks, we have athletes, we have nerds, we have people of all race, color, ethnicity, gender, age, and they all come together and they’re all put into this uniform and they all become one thing,” Bryggman said. “They all work together as a team so it’s like those characteristics that I mentioned before they just leave you once you enter the NJROTC room everyone becomes one so it’s the teamwork and it’s the culture that we have in the NJROTC room those are my two favorite things.”

Brewster NJROTC commander Master Chief Michael Campbell said, “Brewster NJROTC is a citizen development and leadership development program, the blueprint is bringing kids in as a freshman we teach them to be followers first, we enforce and reenforce teamwork, and from followers of the teamwork we start to create the leaders. The whole focus is to build that camaraderie, that teamwork, that followership, and individually create those leaders out of the program.”

The Brewster High School NJROTC program is the only such unit north of New York City and this side of the Hudson. The mission of the program is to instill in students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.

The inspection is designed to ensure that the group operates and maintains U.S. Navy standards, including the proper wearing of the Navy uniform, personal appearance, general knowledge of the U.S. Navy, general orders and chain of command.
