Freshman Taylor Ericson scores twice in Scotts Valley’s girls soccer win | Local Roundup – Santa Cruz Sentinel


Taylor Ericson scored twice in the first 16 minutes, and Scotts Valley High’s girls soccer defeated North Monterey County 2-0 in nonleague action on Monday.

Ericson, a freshman forward, converted on a through ball from freshman center midfielder Lauren Lima in the sixth minute, and finished off a corner kick from junior center mid Dillon Fiorita in the 16th minute.

Falcons sophomore forward Hayden Smith had five shots on goal, including a header that hit the crossbar.

Scotts Valley sophomore Ella Ireland returned to action and made several runs up the line from outside defense.

Senior goalie Paige Bariteau recorded the shutout.

Scotts Valley (1-1-1) hosts Pajaro Valley (0-2-0) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Santa Cruz 2, at Alisal 0: Lia Gularte and Clara Willet scored goals in the second half to lead the Cardinals to the nonleague win Monday.

Gularte scored in the 52nd minute on a pass from Meilia Nee, and Willet scored in the 68th minute on a pass from Sienna Parker.

Goalie Ruby Holmes made eight saves. Sisters Hayden and Rhys Kriege each made a goal line save.

MVC 0, at Gilroy 0: Goalie Alexa Malaspina made 15 saves, including three one-on-one stops, to help the Mustangs play to a scoreless draw in nonleague action Monday.

“Arguably her best match yet!” Mustangs coach John Martin said.

Martin was minus two starters and said that many of his players were still recovering from a tough match against Watsonville on Thursday.

“Many sore joints and lots of bruises, but all the players dug deep and battled through their pain to hold Gilroy to zero,” Martin said.

Martin praised the efforts of his defenders, Briley Payne, Ashlyn Hoffman, Ashley Drago, and Sarah Reiland.

MVC (1-1-3) plays Valley Christian (3-0-0) on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Girls basketball

At Gilroy 40, Pajaro Valley 28: Junior guard Ellie Moore scored seven points in the Grizzlies’ nonleague loss Monday.

Senior guard/forward Thalia Blue scored six points for the rebuilding Grizzlies (0-2), who graduated three starters. Senior guard/forward Giselle Quintero chipped in with five points.

Sophomore Tiara Wortham scored 12 points to lead the Mustangs (3-4), who never trailed. They led 6-2 after the first quarter, 20-12 at the half, and entered the fourth up 28-17.

Pajaro Valley faces Rio Americano (0-4) in the Stevenson Tournament on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

St. Francis 35, at Carmel 27: Freshman Maya Calfee scored 18 points, and the Sharks won their nonleague game Monday.

Senior Emily Raich scored 11 points for St. Francis, and sophomore Peyton Orradre chipped in with four points.
