NFL player lost $8 million from gambling in 2022 season alone – Marca

The NFL finds itself facing a significant issue related to fast-rise of online gambling, as recent reports indicate that one player lost a staggering $8 million during the 2022 NFL season. However, the specific player and the type of gambling that led to these losses have not been disclosed.

While NFL players are allowed to gamble on sports outside of the league’s facilities, questions have arisen regarding the rationale behind the policy. The recent story from Pro Football Talk (PFT) raises concerns about the NFL allowing its players to participate in various forms of gambling.

The nature of these losses could encompass a range of possibilities. It could that it was casino games, such as slot machines, roulette, or blackjack, contributed to the player’s significant financial loss. It is worth noting that these types of bets typically carry less weight than the sports wagers that resulted in the recent suspensions of multiple players during the offseason.

Number of incidents in the league are rising

A handful of players, including Jameson Williams, last year’s first-round pick for the Lions, and Shaka Toney, a defensive lineman for the Commanders, faced suspensions for placing NFL or college game bets while on team premises. Isaiah Rodgers, a cornerback for the Colts, was even implicated for making multiple NFL bets, including some involving his own team. Although, Calvin Ridleythe now wide-receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars is probably the most infamous case, when he was suspended for the entire NFL season for betting on his former team the Atlanta Falcons.

Calvin Ridley had been suspended last NFL season for betting on his own team

Regardless of the specifics, losing $8 million in a single season is a massive figure. The consequences of these losses extend beyond financial implications, highlighting the potential risks and pitfalls associated with gambling.

Where does the NFL go from here?

The NFL now faces the challenge of addressing this gambling issue within its player community. Striking a balance between allowing personal freedoms and protecting the integrity and well-being of its athletes will be a delicate task. The league may soon look to reevaluate its policies and implement measures to promote responsible gambling practices while protecting the interests of all parties involved, or may even do away with sports gambling for their players in its entirety.
