Techno Junky. Eco-bio-nano pills won’t SOS. | by Heather-Lynn Remacle | Decades After Paris | Dec, 2023 – Medium

Eco-bio-nano pills won’t SOS.

It was this same time of year when Heather and Danton were walking through a mall that Techno Junky presented itself.

People swarming around a mobile technology booth and a striking human with colourful hair and steampunk adornments conjured the imagery.

“Techno Junky with a Bluetooth brain” bantered Danton. “Got washed out by the hot, hot rain,” countered Heather.

They walked holding hands, absorbing the absurdity of the consumerist season, while seeking the hope and generosity of spirit they desired. The lyrics flowed with ideas about where the song would sit in the album.

“Techno Junky” is a moment in the story that conveys a hopeful time and place in a wealthy country. A place that has the resources to adapt as the impacts of a warming climate (hot rain) challenge the validity of over-reliance on technology to solve the crisis.

The song surfaces the opportunity for resilience and regeneration through nature-based solutions and a circular economy. The artists also wanted to express the need for mental health and collaboration in a future where we are effective at adaptation.

We need the deep care of people who collaborate.

And, as much as we’ll need technology, there’s no escaping our fate through the metaverse. Dirt is a reference to being grounded in real life and a connection to the soil biome.

Verse 1:
Pocket power in the info age
Moved masses with survival rage
A meme on kittens, thirsty in L.A.
Might have been what saved the day
Round and round the story goes
If we make it we’ll be heroes
Change the defaults, change the rules
With no foresight we are fools

Chorus:
Techno junky with a Bluetooth brain
Got washed out by the hot, hot rain
We got dirty, dirty, dirtier still
In real life we can have free will.

Verse 2:
Only take what we need
Grow biodiversity
Rediscover prosperity
Butterflies and human lives in harmony
Round and round the turbine turns
By the wind not by what burns
A boulevard of food and fun
Electrons supplied by the sun

Bridge:
Bright beacons where we open up
Laughter where we play
People fed with trust and love
Will see a brighter day
A circular economy
Where we care, where we stand
Engineering opportunity
But eco-bio-nano pills won’t SOS
Oh no, no they won’t SOS
Oh no, no they won’t SOS
Oh no, no they won’t

The artists wanted this song to be upbeat, fun, and a little cheeky. When they hit Baker Studios, they had a shell of a song and needed to fill it out.

Danton is a big fan of Prince, and worked with Joby to channel Prince Level funk and groove. It’s the only song on the album with a synth bass.

For vocals, Joby wanted to draw out more playful edginess. They experimented with Heather shaping her vocals with a mild Cyndi Lauper vibe.

Since releasing the album, when people ask what genre it is… this song is one that definitely challenges conformity. The duo often joke that they are post-genre.

Techno Junky is noted as a favourite by a few of their super fans. It might be the musical composition, or the hopeful narrative that draw people to it. Either way, it is a head-bopping number that contrasts beautifully with the song that follows.
