Friday’s Boys Basketball Rewind: Cox Mill upsets No. 16 Country Day – Charlotte Observer

Cox Mill High School (5-1) handed Charlotte Country Day (9-1) its first loss of the season Friday, earning a 72-60 win on the road.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” Chargers coach Davis Absher said after the win. “We are a really young group with no seniors. After losing a tough game to Kings Mountain on Tuesday, for us to fight back being a couple men down with some guys hurt, I couldn’t be prouder.”

Cox Mill guard Sean Dunn led the Chargers with 20 points. He was important Friday in helping his team deal with momentum when Country Day made a few runs.

“Sean is an important guy for us,” Absher said. “We trust him a lot. He is one of our veteran guys. This is his third year on the varsity team. He is a special player. He keeps us steady. When we have down moments or we are struggling, he keeps us steady. He did an unbelievable job at the free throw line tonight. Any time we got a little rattled he was able to bring us back together.”

On a run of their own, the Chargers started pressing the Buccaneers, forcing several turnovers early in the game. Dunn came up with a steal and despite standing only 5-foot-11, he leaped up for a big dunk.

“My parents were both college athletes,” Dunn said. “So, I’ve got pretty good genes.”

Dunn said he and the Chargers took notice of the most recent Observer Sweet 16 rankings and felt it added some additional motivation.

“Charlotte Country Day got put in the Sweet 16 over us,” Dunn said. “I think we all saw that and took that personally. At one point in the third quarter they took the lead back from us. I was able to lead us back through that and I couldn’t be prouder of the whole team.”

Three who made a difference

Amare Bethel, Charlotte Country Day: The senior guard led all scorers with 30 points, 11 coming in the third quarter when the Buccaneers went on their scoring surge, coming back to take the lead.

Sean Dunn, Cox Mill: Dunn had 20 points and six assists for the Chargers. His leadership on the floor proved to be vital in the win. He is vocal with his teammates and knows how to bring the best out of each one of them.

Cruz Miller, Cox Mill: The freshman guard played big minutes for the Chargers. He had 13 points and also came away with two steals and a block.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Charlotte Country Day will face Victory Christian Center on Dec. 9 at 2:30 p.m., while Cox Mill will host Weddington on Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
