More than a year later, he talks about the debacle as he interviews with CBS. He also talked about why he entered Australia without getting a COVID-19 vaccination.

Djokovic, who was prepared to play in the Australian Open, faced much trouble. He had not taken the vaccine for COVID-19, which was required to play in Australia. The controversy became the center focus of the world, and the Serbian star became the villain.

Djokovic became the center of attention when the 2022 tennis season rolled around. The Serbinator found himself being held up by the authorities in Australia and having to announce his withdrawal from the first slam of the year. He was recently interviewed on 60 Minutes with CBS, where he was questioned about the time. Jon Wertheim, a famed sports reporter, asked if the situation took a toll on him.  

Djokovic told him, “It did. I was basically declared as a villain of the world, you know.” He further talked about how he had sensed his new status. “Of course. And I had basically, yeah, most of the world against me. I had that kind of experience on the tennis court with, with crowds that were not maybe cheering me on. But I never had this particular experience before in my life.”

When asked if he had read them wrong, since it was a culture that doesn’t allow for exceptions, Djokovic said, “But the point is that it was not up to me to read anybody. I got the exemption. I got permission to come into the country. And so, of course, it escalated to the highest of the highest levels globally.”

Djokovic would suffer from not receiving the vaccine as he would have to miss many tournaments following the 2022 Australian Open. In the CBS interview, he also cleared his stance on mandatory vaccines.

When discussing his general outlook on vaccines, Djokovic said he was never against them. Instead, he had always been on the side of choice. He doesn’t want vaccines to be mandatory, and he doesn’t want people to shun vaccines. But the general populace should have the capacity to choose. His statement caused his fans to go into a rage as they spoke out to support him.

Some said that only he has the guts to stand up to the media. Many were also glad that a ‘false narrative’ had been pushed by the media to declare him anti-vaccine when he has not stated that himself. Now that the air is clear on the matter, Djokovic fans have found vindication as they were lambasted for supporting their star early in 2022.
