Alex De Minaur Wins His Second Newcombe Medal After Successful 2023 Season – Yardbarker

Alex de Minaur won his second Newcombe Medal for his contributions to Australian tennis throughout 2023.

In 2018, the 24-year-old won his first Newcombe Medal, which he shared with former Australian WTA player and three-time Grand Slam winner Ashleigh Barty. The award recognizes the most talented and successful Australian tennis players each year.

A second Newcombe Medal for de Minaur comes after his most consistent season to date, where he won his first ATP 500 event at the Acapulco Open and helped Australia to reach the Davis Cup final in November.

When speaking about his second Newcombe Medal, and whilst reflecting on his achievement, de Minaur expressed gratitude for receiving the award yet again and shared his thanks to the medal’s namesake, John ‘Newk’ Newcombe.

“I’m very sad that I wasn’t able to attend the Newcombe Medal this year and I’m extremely grateful for this amazing award,. It’s been a great year, not only for myself, but for all of Australian tennis and I think we should (all be) very proud indeed.”

“(I) would also like to thank Newk. Wish I could shake your hand right now and be there, but I appreciate everything you do for Australian tennis.”

Upon earning his second Newcombe Medal, de Minaur also became just the second male Australian player to win the accolade on more than one occasion. The current ATP number 11 joined wheelchair tennis player Dylan Alcott, in the record books as he won the award in 2016 and 2021.

In addition, the 24-year-old joins other Australian greats Nick Kyrgios and Lleyton Hewitt in winning the award. During his acceptance speech, a nostalgiac de Minaur shared how winning his second Newcombe Medal was a dream come true and something he strived for as a young tennis player.

“This is one of those awards that as a kid you want to do everything in your power to achieve,”
