Soul Santa made a stop in Burlington at the Vermont Comedy Club on Saturday as kids get their final wishes in with Christmas just days away.Those organizing the event say it’s important that the BIPOC community have a Santa that resembles people of color for their own children to look up to.”It’s really just making everyone feel reflected and the spirit of the holiday,” said Kesha Ram Hinsdale, a state senator. For a lot of folks you might want Santa to look like their grandfather, someone who just gives them comfort and feels like family,” she said. Soul Santa said it’s a chance to show the Christmas spirit is inside of everyone. “I think the spirit of Christmas runs through us all and it’s nice to see reflection of everybody in Santa,” said Soul Santa. For some kids, it was their first time meeting him. “It’s the only Black Santa I’ve seen before,” said one child. They really appreciated having someone that reflects them to hear their special Christmas wishes. “Seeing black Santa is amazing because especially for black BIPOC kids that usually only see white Santa, it’s pretty neat to see black Santa,” said a child attending. A surprise group of Christmas carolers also stopped by to spread their holiday cheer to all.
