No-one would begrudge Os Lobos a win here, mind you. They have been a beacon of joy throughout the pool, an everyman team playing enterprising and brave rugby – how we all imagine we’d do it given the chance. Their quarter-final vs England is confirmed, but all the pre-tournament and post-Wallabies result confidence and vim looks to have ebbed away in the last two matches. TRY! Fiji 23 – 24 Portugal (Rodrigo Marta)
79 mins. Portugal have the ball back and have decided to give it one last lash, moving the ball left then right, where fast hands set Storti free and gassing around Lomani. He draws the fullback and pops inside to Marta who gleefully runs it in!
Marques tees it up and calmly puts his side in front with less than a minute on the clock!
PENALTY! Fiji 23 – 17 (Frank Lomani)
76 mins. Another penalty in front, this one a lot further out, but same result from Lomani.
74 mins. After a frenetic period, that penalty from Fiji appears to have brought acceptance among participants in the game that this is what the result is to be. Portugal in particular seem to have had their energy sucked from them. Can they rally for a final push?
PENALTY! Fiji 20 – 17 Portugal (Frank Lomani)
72 mins. Portugal are offside pretty much in front of the posts, and even this Fiji performance won’t turn that opportunity down.
71 mins. Perhaps understandably given they’ve made 150-plus tackles, Portugal are looking more ragged in defence which is a prompt for Fiji to put their foot down on the big carries. Ikanivere rampages forward and this allows Botitu to find a deep touch for Portugal.
TRY! Fiji 17 – 17 Portugal (Mesake Doge)
68 mins. A well executed lineout drive ends with Doge forcing over to score.
Lomani converts to bring the scores level once more.
67 mins. Another few impressive looking running phases from Fiji that come to an end because eventually someone forgets to catch the ball. But they have an advantage and put it in the corner once more.
64 mins. The game is now absolutely frantic. Fiji are playing like the don’t have a lot of time (they do) and Portugal are chucking it about like they are having a great time (they are).
There’s a penalty for Fiji which is kickable, but the points opportunity is spurned, they put it in the corner and…. lose their own lineout.
62 mins. Nayacelevu has left the field for Iosefo Masi
60 mins. It’s a tap and go from eight metres from the Fijian forwards, but yet again the Os Lobos defence is like a pincer movement of absolutely fuming velociraptors. They stop every carry dead, and eventually Fiji’s hands-like-feet affliction makes itself known once more as the ball is fumbled forward.
One hell of a 20 minutes incoming….
57 mins. The pressure continues from Fiji and Portugal are penalised for not rolling away. The ball is moved on the advantage, but Tuisova drops it.
55 mins. Fiji have a lineout of their own and it takes them into the 22. They are up to nine phases but have been moved backwards by the tenacious defence before Maqala drives forward again. In the shadow of the line one big carry is all it will take, but the ball is lost forward and cleared to touch by Lima.
This last 10 minutes has been absolutely ridiculous!
52 mins. The bunker has confirmed that Botia’s yellow will remain that colour. He’ll be back in six minutes.
TRY! Fiji 10 – 17 Portugal (Francisco Fernandes)
51 mins. A towering lineout take by Cerqueira sets up a mobile Portugal maul, that rumbles up to the line for Fernandes to force over.
Marques adds the two.
YELLOW CARD! Levani Botia (Fiji)
49 mins. Botia decides to impose himself in defence, but his tackle on Rodrigo Marta is low to high and drives head into chin.
Ref Pearce give him a card, with a review in the bunker to come.
TRY! Fiji 10 – 10 Portugal (Levani Botia)
47 mins. From the kick off Portugal have another attack, but Habosi picks up a stray ball and flies up the field. He is shepherded in-field and stopped by the defence, but a few phases later the talisman Botia forces over from a metre.
Lomani converts.
TRY! Fiji 3 – 10 Portugal (Rafaelle Storti)
45 mins. Botitu misses touch after a scrum penalty and the ball is played quickly by Os Lobos, with Portela gathering a kick after a big chase. They move it quckly right for Bettencourt to tickle and absolute beauty of a grubber into the corner for Storti to finish wonderfully under pressure from two defenders. WHAT A TRY!

Two points added.
43 mins. Some slick offloading out on the right by Portugal, including Mike Tadjer holding the ball behind his back at one point before an offload, such is the joy the man brings. They work it left but there is one offload too many as the ball spills.
42 mins. On the advantage from the Botia penalty, Portugal move the ball left to Bettencourt who is through Nayacelevu but just loses the ball as he looks to offload to Lima, who would have had a lot of open space to run into.
SECOND HALF!
We’re back in play, and straight away Botia is offside at the first ruck.
I covered the Fiji loss to Uruguay in 2019 and this performance is shrouded in the same reeking miasma at present. That day in Japan featured no cohesion, poor concentration and an inability to execute anything consistently. There was always the belief it would come good enough to win, but it didn’t.
Raiwalui’s Fiji have seemed a very different set-up this year, so whatever he is saying at half-time better prove that.
“I am in Portugal willing the local team to get seven more points so that the Wallabies might progress.” says the presumably Australian, Tony Richardson. “Would love to find a pub that’s showing the game, but no luck. Go Portugal!”
If Fiji keep at this level of general sausage fingerness combined with zero discernible pattern, then this game could be heading for the result that everyone that isn’t Australian wants: a Portugal win by less than seven points.
Imagine if it’s worse than that for Fiji and Eddie Jones hones back into view…
HALF TIME! Fiji 3 -3 Portugal
40 mins. And navigate it they do, Simoes clawing the ball out and bunting it into touch.
39 mins. Fiji come back strong, entering the Os Lobos 22 via another lightning Habosi run. But, once again the Portuguese defensive wall rebuilds itself at Lego Movie speed to force another knock-on.
Portugal will have to navigate a scrum-five to get the ball out to end the half.
PENALTY! Fiji 3 – 3 Portugal (Samuel Marques)
37 mins. That was all on a penalty advantage, so Marques tees it up and brings his side level.
36 mins. Portugal have a lineout in the Fiji 22 which they catch and drive. For a moment, it looks like Tadjer may have broken off the back of the maul to score, but the ball is dropped backwards. Marques feeds the backs and Fiji are offside in their defensive desperation.
On the advantage, the ball is kicked right and Storti is first to it but nudges the ball forward as he tries to pick up and ground it! That was a try if he’d just managed to hold it!
32 mins. Tadjer is back in his 22 covering like a fly half and he caresses a lovely kick to touch in the Fiji half. From the lineout, the Fijians work right through hands before the ball is lost due to Nayacelevu chucking a pointless through-the-legs pass both forward and nowhere near his team-mate.
30 mins. The latest issue for Fiji has them pouncing on a mishandling from Lima that is hacked on, but then they dive on a prone Cardoso Pinto as he gathers the ball. A senseless penalty as they were about to put real pressure on.
Apart from a few moments, Fiji have been absolute dreck.
27 mins. Habosi has entered the game via a gliding, stepping run from his own 22 and going a full forty metres. But, as he reaches the Portugal 10m line he’s all alone and succumbs to a tackle then a holding on penalty.
Os Lobos tap and go and just as it looks like they are about to have Fiji in real trouble the ball is fumbled forward. Gah!
24 mins. Things I thought I would never type: Fiji are squeezing the life out of their opponents with their well drilled scrum.
This gives them the platform to fly into the Portugal half, but Os Lobos contain them in defence and an unfortunate slip from Maqala in the 22 presents the opportunity for the defence to clamp on and win a clearing penalty.
21 mins. Once more Fiji start to move the ball around halfway, the phases busily edging them forward, but they have been imprecise at key moments so far and it’s the same here as Botitu throws an offload behind Ravataumada and into touch.
Six handling errors for the favourites so far. That wants sorting, clearly.
19 mins. Bill Mata has a big run after he gathers a Marques goal-line drop out. He’s stopped dead by two Os Lobos defenders and the possession is lost on the next phase allowing Portela to boom it clear.
16 mins. There’s a hectic bit of traded possion with both sides making ground through some strong runs before coughing up the ball. Following this a period of kicking from hand settles in, ending when Portugal win a penalty at the breakdown. They will have a lineout just inside the Fiji half.
Early sub for Fiji due to injury, Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta replaces Temo Mayanavanua
13 mins. Fiji have some phases around halfway, moving it across the line and back again before Nayacelevu decides this is going nowhere and drills a kick towards Cardoso Pinto, who slices his kick into touch. Advantage to the men in white and a little indication of the different attitude in this squad: it wasn’t going anywhere, so they sensibly booted it to gain territory.

9 mins. Tadjer is caught up to some unlawful mischief at the breakdown, so Lomani tees it up and hits it horribly but somehow manages to banana it through the sticks.
7 mins. Fiji are having a horrible time at the lineout so far, and the latest Matavesi throw is smacked to the Os Lobos side by Cerqueira. The ball is worked quickly to Cardoso Pinto who is rattled to a halt by Tuisova before Marques overcooks a kick to touch.
4 mins. Mawi nicks the ball at the breakdown on his own 22, but Botitu’s clearance kick is charged down by Bettencourt and it looks like Fiji are in some trouble before Marques is pinged for not releasing that relieves the pressure.
2 mins. A confident start from Portugal, warming everyone’s hands with the ball before some miscommunication at the ruck allows Mayanavanua to yoink the ball as it comes out. But, Fiji are then offside at the next breakdown.
