MSU Extension invites local farmers to attend Golden Triangle cropping seminars – NBC Montana


Montana State University Extension invites local farmers to attend its Golden Triangle cropping seminar series this upcoming week.

The seminars will take place in the Golden Triangle area of north-central Montana, including Great Falls, Conrad, Cut Bank, Choteau, Shelby, Stanford, Fort Benton, Chester and Havre.

The seminars are free, and with speakers discussing crop rotations, weed resistance, vertebrate pests and marketing tips.

The following list includes dates, times and locations of the seminars:

Montana State University released the following information:

Montana State University Extension will host its annual cropping seminar series Jan. 8-12 in the Golden Triangle area of north-central Montana.

Speakers will cover topics like weed resistance, crop rotations, marketing tips and vertebrate pests.

Interested individuals can attend in Chester, Choteau, Conrad, Cut Bank, Fort Benton, Great Falls, Havre, Shelby and Stanford.

The Great Falls seminar will begin at 9:30 a.m., and all others at 8:30 a.m. There is no charge for the seminars, and all producers are encouraged to attend. RSVPs are encouraged in advance but are not required.

Both commercial and private pesticide licensing recertification credits will be available.

At the seminars, Tim Seipel will discuss weed resistance in Montana, including how it develops, management and prevention, and awareness of weeds in croplands. Seipel is the MSU Extension cropland weed extension specialist, Integrated Pest Management Program coordinator and an assistant research professor at MSU.

Pat Carr, Central Agricultural Research Center superintendent and associate professor, will provide a crop rotation update. Carr’s research interests include dryland cropping systems and strategies to improve economic and environmental sustainability; organic farming and regenerative agriculture philosophy and practice; alternative cropping practices, including intercropping and dual-use cover-forage crop systems; and integrated crop-livestock systems. His teaching interests include general crop production; forage management and production; conservation tillage systems; organic farming and regenerative agriculture; and emerging field crop systems.

Eric Belasco, head of the MSU Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics, will present “Ten Marketing Tips for Wheat, Barley and Pulse Crop Producers.” Belasco’s research primarily focuses on agricultural marketing and applied econometrics. His research explores variability in profits, production and marketing.

Stephen Vantassel, Montana Department of Agriculture vertebrate pest specialist, will discuss vertebrate pests in crops and rangeland. Pests to be discussed include ground squirrels, pocket gophers and more. Vantassel develops pest control training for pesticide applicators, creates publications and training materials, and serves as a resource for vertebrate pest control methods for producers and landowners in Montana.
