PCS, Pajaro Valley girls soccer teams play to PCAL Mission draw | Local Roundup – Santa Cruz Sentinel


Pacific Collegiate School’s girls soccer team and visiting Pajaro Valley played to a 1-all draw in their Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division match at Depot Park in Santa Cruz on Wednesday.

PCS’s Anna Walker-Edwards headed in a corner kick from Kate Lane in the eighth minute.

The Grizzlies knotted the score in the 48th minute. Junior center midfielder Valeria Acosta scored on a pass from senior left wing Maricza Rodriguez.

Pumas goalie Kaia Stinson played in the first half and made four saves, and teammate Claire Protti played in the second half and made three saves.

Anna Walker-Edwards had seven of PCS’s 13 shots.

Goalie Aniah Federico made 10 saves for the Grizzlies (4-4-1, 2-0-1).

On Friday, Pajaro Valley hosts Soledad at 3 p.m., and PCS (3-3-2, 0-1-1) plays at Carmel at 3:30 p.m.

MVC 3, at Soledad 1: Julia Reiland scored twice in the Mustangs’ PCAL Mission Division win Wednesday.

Lauren Kelley also scored for MVC (4-3-3, 2-0-0).

Goalie Alexa Malaspina made 13 saves for the Mustangs, who host North Salinas (1-8-1, 0-1-1) on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

St. Francis 0, at Notre Dame 0: The Sharks and host Spirits played to a scoreless draw in their PCAL Cypress Division match Wednesday at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas.

St. Francis (0-7-1, 0-1-1) hosts Santa Catalina (2-2-2, 1-1-0) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Cabrillo 102, at Hartnell 70: The Seahawks had five players reach double digits in scoring in their Coast Conference South Division opener Wednesday.

It was the 10th time in 17 games that the Seahawks have scored 100 or more points.

Solomon Tucker scored a team-high 15 points for the Seahawks, and Jalen Cunningham and Cullen Cleaves each scored 13 points. Clarence Martin scored 12 points, and Taray Winfrey added 10 points.

Cabrillo (16-1, 1-0) host San Jose City (13-4, 0-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Hartnell dropped to 4-12, 0-1.

Boys soccer

At Pajaro Valley 2, Monterey 0: The Grizzlies scored twice in the first half to stun the Toreadores in PCAL Mission action Wednesday.

Jesus Maravilla Ortiz scored on a pass from Giovanni Bedolla in the 12th minute, and Jesus Alvarado gave the Grizzlies an insurance tally in the 33rd minute, when he finished off a pass from Isaac Rojas.

Goalie Luis Tellez played 40 minutes and made three saves, and teammate Damian Rodriguez played 40 minutes and made four saves.

The Toreadores (7-3-1, 1-2-0) were shut out for the second straight game and third time this season.

The Grizzlies (3-4-3, 1-1-1) play at Soledad on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls basketball

At St. Francis 50, King City 27: Senior Aaliysah Gomez scored 17 points, and the Sharks stayed unbeaten in PCAL Cypress Division play Wednesday.

Freshman Maya Calfee scored 13 points for St. Francis, which led 28-14 at the half, and senior teammate Emily Raich scored 10 points.

The Sharks (9-2, 3-0) play at PCS (6-3, 0-2) on Friday at 7 p.m.

At PCS 43, Gonzales 25: Junior Addie Payne and senior Maiya Armstrong had double-doubles in the Pumas’ PCAL Cypress Division win Wednesday.

Junior Addie Payne had 20 points, 18 rebounds, and six blocks, and Armstrong had 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Netta Wainshal added six points for the Pumas (7-3, 1-2), who host St. Francis on Friday at 7 p.m.

At Seaside 53, MVC 48: Junior Gia Herrera scored a season-high 20 points for the Mustangs in their PCAL Mission Division loss Wednesday.

Senior Rhazelle Gonzales scored 10 points for the Mustangs, who trailed by 13 points at the half.

MVC (8-6, 2-1) plays at Harker in San Jose on Saturday at noon.

Boys basketball

At MVC 72, Gonzales 61: Nico Downie and Bryce Brogan each scored 21 points, and the Mustangs remained unbeaten in the PCAL Cypress Division on Wednesday.

Jack Ryan scored 15 points for the Mustangs, who jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter.

Adrian Perez made seven 3-pointers and finished with 30 points for the Spartans (3-9, 1-2).

MVC (10-3, 3-0) plays at North Salinas (5-8, 2-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

At Stevenson 63, St. Francis 44: Joseph Rose made five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points in the Sharks’ PCAL Mission Division loss Wednesday.

Mario Zermeno scored 10 points for St. Francis, and Markel Parker grabbed eight rebounds.

Cooper Olin had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates (6-7, 1-2).

St. Francis (1-11, 0-2) hosts Pacific Grove (5-8, 1-2) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

At Hartnell 82, Cabrillo 52: The Seahawks lost their Coast Conference South Division opener Wednesday.

Cabrillo (3-12, 0-1) host San Jose City (14-3, 1-0) on Friday at 5 p.m.
