Utah Jazz vs. New Orleans Pelicans Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 1-23-2024 – Stat Salt

On Tuesday night, the Utah Jazz head to the Smoothie King Center for a road matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Jazz were clipped by the Houston Rockets two nights ago. The Pelicans lost against the Phoenix Suns. The tip is at 8:10 PM ET. New Orleans opens as a home favorite.

Jazz Lose in Overtime

The Jazz followed up a six-game winning streak with back-to-back losses, the latest one a thrilling 127-126 overtime loss in Houston. Jordan Clarkson led Utah with 33 points off the bench, while Collin Sexton added 28.  Sexton missed a 3 at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. “I will live and die with those shots every time,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said. “Those guys have proven they can make those shots time and time again. But ultimately, not being able to secure defensive rebounds and secure the ball ultimately cost us in that game.”

Kris Dunn and Houston forward Jabari Smith Jr. had to be separated late in the third quarter after Dunn set a hard screen on Smith immediately following Lauri Markkanen’s defensive rebound. Both players were assessed technical fouls.

Utah turned it over 17 times and gave up 24 offensive rebounds, and coach Will Hardy was shocked they were even in the game. Lauri Markkanen had an off night but he has been playing very well. The big man now has five double-doubles over his last eight outings — a span in which he’s scored 20 or more points each time as well.

Pelicans Fall at Home

New Orleans failed to control Devin Booker as he scored 52 points in a 123-109 home loss to the Phoenix Suns. Zion Williamson scored 24 points and Brandon Ingram added 18. The Suns shot 49.5% (46 of 93) and led by 30 points in the second half. New Orleans missed 32 of 42 3-point shots – two nights after making a franchise-record 25 from deep in a blowout victory over Charlotte. “They kind of knocked us on our heels early,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said, expanding upon his team’s lack of defense. “Once they did, it was just hard for us to get back into a rhythm. That’s where their biggest struggles are. We have talked about it and had honest discussions, they can score, but we’ve got to guard.”

The Pelicans missed 17 of their first 19 3-point attempts. The Suns led 100-80 heading into the final period and both teams sat players down the stretch in the fourth. Although he is healthy, Zion’s production has taken a hit this year. He has gone from averaging 26 points per game last season to 21.9 points this season.

Rating:

After the Jazz went on a smooth six-game winning streak, they fell back to Earth with a tough 127-126 overtime loss against the Houston Rockets. Utah turned it over 17 times and gave up 24 offensive rebounds, but they hung tough in the game. They will not play as carelessly as they did against Houston, and after getting two nights off they will regroup with a nice performance here on the road. They lead the NBA in offensive rebound percentage and will cause havoc on the inside against an unathletic Pelicans frontline. Trust the Jazz to play well, and with pace, in a big road win here. Take Utah.

Prediction: Utah Jazz

Rating:

Despite the tough ending, Jordan Clarkson led the Jazz in scoring during the Houston loss and is now averaging 22.0 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds across his past eight games. The 31-year-old continues to thrive with the second unit, as Saturday marked his third game with 30-plus points off the bench this season. He is a popular commodity in the trade market for contending teams, but the Jazz climbed back to .500 with that winning streak and may be increasing the price for the veteran guard. Regardless, I like this game to go over as both teams will push the tempo. Utah played sloppy against the Rockets, and they lead the NBA in turnovers, but look for them to drop a lot of points. Take the over.

Prediction: OVER
