Wildcats Top Mountaineers in Tennis Opener – App State Athletics

DAVIDSON, N.C. – App State tennis fell to Davidson in its 2024 season opener, 4-2, on Sunday. The Mountaineers picked up individual wins from freshman Taya Powell and graduate student Maggie Pate, plus a doubles win from the pair.
App State (0-1) failed to secure the doubles point as it fell short 2-1. The Mountaineers’ No. 2 doubles team of Pate and Powell won their first doubles match this season, 6-2. Senior Ellie Murphy and freshman Naledi Manyube lost 5-1 in the No. 1 matchup, and the No. 3 pair of sophomores Savannah Dada-Mascoll and Riley Collins fell short in a tiebreaker by a 7-6 (7-2) score, giving Davidson the doubles point.
In singles play, Powell and Pate both secured straight-set wins for the Mountaineers on courts No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. The freshman Aussie represented the Black and Gold on court No. 1, defeating her opponent 6-1, 7-5. Pate picked up the win on court No. 3, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-4. On court No. 2, Manyube fell 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets in her Black and Gold debut. Collins and Murphy lost on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts.

App State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 3 in the High Country for its home opener. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start time against Queens University.
