Strong Singles Play Leads Aztecs Past Maryland – SDSU Athletics


TUCSON, Ariz. – A day after the San Diego State women’s tennis team was rained out against Arizona at Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona, it was able to complete its match against Maryland at the same venue. San Diego State remained unable to win the doubles point but continued its singles dominance in a 4-2 win on Saturday. The Aztecs are 13-3 in singles play over their three-match winning streak.
 
The Scarlet and Black improve to 3-1 and a perfect 3-0 against unranked opponents while the Terrapins drop to 3-2. SDSU joins No. 2-ranked Stanford as the only teams to beat Maryland so far this season.
 
Playing on the top court, Yasmine Kabbaj went up against Minorka Miranda. Kabbaj cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win.
 
On court No. 2, Andjela Skrobonja faced Kallista Liu and coasted as she picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
 
In her singles match, Andreea Velcea played Francesca Feodorov on court No. 5. After a 6-2 first set win, she faced a tougher challenge in the second but came through 7-5.
 
Zoe Olmos battled Ela Platenikova on the sixth court. Olmos won the first set 6-1 but fell 6-4 in the second. She was able to come out on top 6-1 in the deciding third set to clinch an Aztec victory.
 
No. 111-ranked Myah Petchey played on the third court against Maria Budin. The two split the first two sets with Petchey taking the first 6-1 and Budin winning 6-4 in the second. The deciding third set was even at three when the Aztecs clinched the match.
 
Playing on the fourth court, Gloria Alogo matched up with Diya Challa. Alogo was dropped in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
 
In doubles, Skrobonja and Velcea faced Miranda and Budin on the top court. The Aztecs fell 6-3. On court No. 3, Alogo and Olmos teamed up against Liu and Challa but were bested 6-2. Kabbaj and Petchey trailed Feodorov and Platenikova 5-3 on the second court when Maryland clinched the doubles point.
 
SDSU has a week and a half off before three home matches in six days at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs host Hawai’i on February 14, Long Beach State on the 16th and California on the 18th.
