Today’s top TV and streaming picks: New drama Blackshore, The Monuments Men and Let’s Talk About Chu

Blackshore RTÉ One, 9.30pm Lisa Dwan is best known for her theatre work, in particular her interpretations of Samuel Beckett’s plays. But she also does TV, and was an unforgettably edgy presence in Netflix’s revival of the hard-hitting London crime drama Top Boy, playing the haughty Irish drug dealer Lizzie Kinfauns. She’s on the right side of the law in this new mystery series from the creators of the family saga Smother.

Fia Lucey is a driven and relentlessly focused Dublin police detective who buries herself in her work to drown out the ghosts of her past. Twenty years ago, her entire family was killed in a shameful tragedy involving her father in her hometown of Blackwater. Now Fia has been accused of using undue force during an interview, and is stood down from her high-profile post and sent back to Blackwater, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a woman.

The town is now a changed and prosperous place, thanks to the international success of the whiskey distillery, but locals still remember exactly who Fia is, and are not thrilled that she has returned to dredge up a notorious and half-forgotten episode. As the investigation proceeds, Fia struggles to retain her objectivity as she locks horns with some of Blackwater’s most powerful citizens. Rory Keenan, Andrew Bennett, Stanley Townsend, Amy de Bhrún, Jade Jordan and Aidan McArdle co-star.

Orion and The Dark

Orion and The Dark Netflix, streaming now Something for any kiddiwinks in your life; all new viewing is welcome at this juncture — even if winter is on the wane. Underneath his seemingly normal exterior, Orion is a ball of adolescent anxiety, consumed by irrational fears of everything, but mostly the dark. So, he becomes friends with it. If you’re required to watch it with your liddler, adults are catered to, what with it being co-written by Charlie Kaufman and narrated by Werner Herzog. Let’s Talk About Chu Netflix, streaming now Part-time vlogger Chu Ai (Chan Tzu-hsuan) is a wax therapist by day and a part-time vlogger who waxes lyrical (apologies) about sex at night. Her golden rule? “Make love, not fall in love.” It’s as cheeky as it is bold.

Mr & Mrs Smith

Mr & Mrs Smith Prime Video, streaming now It’s OK. You haven’t been propelled back to 2005. This variation is far more inverted than the Brangelina offering. Here, Donald Glover (Jnr) and Francesca Sloane star as two lonely strangers who work for a spy agency that offers them a covetable life of espionage. The only catch is they need to discard their current identities and partake in an arranged marriage. For realz.

Movie release round-up Various Platforms, streaming this week Whether they’re a few years old — like The Favourite or The Lost City (Netflix) — or new, like Upgraded (released Friday via Prime Video and co-starring Saoirse-Monica Jackson), your streaming platforms are awash with movies. Most notably, Killers of The Flower Moon (AppleTV+).
