Trade rumors are swirling in a competitive title chase, as franchises look to make upgrades or sell off before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. 

While the Raptors already shipped out big names in Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, there’s plenty of bait still available as we count down to 3 p.m. ET on February 8, and sportsbooks are naturally posting NBA futures markets for bettors to dig into.

Will the Bulls pull the trigger on their much-rumored fire sale? Will the Lakers move the needle for another playoff push?

D’Angelo Russell

D’Angelo Russell hasn’t exactly had a smooth career since his surprise All-Star nod in 2019, proving to be a difficult system player who’s often chided for taking as much away from the table as he brings to it. On a Lakers team that’s roundly underachieved this season, he’s been a prime target for a needed shakeup.

Well, whether it’s an effort to endear himself to the Lakers or boost his trade stock, DLo had his best stretch in recent memory in January, dropping 22.7 ppg on a molten-hot 46% from 3-point range.

He’s been most linked in rumors with the Hawks, as L.A. looks to upgrade its backcourt. Bringing us to…

Dejounte Murray

Dejounte Murray has always been a bit of an awkward fit next to a player as ball-dominant as Trae Young, marginalizing his playmaking ability in the Hawks‘ offense.

Fortunately for him, the Hawks have been fairly lousy this season (10th in East), prompting the front office to wonder if it’s time to jettison Murray before likely losing him in free agency for nothing this summer. 

The Lakers have expressed interest, and Murray’s also been linked in rumors to his former home in San Antonio. DraftKings feels he’s the most likely to be moved, as the only player listed on their deadline odds who’s not odds-on to remain with his current team.

DeMar DeRozan

The Chicago Bulls have been in purgatory for several seasons, burdened by an increasingly horrific trade for Nikola Vucevic and the tragic demise of Lonzo Ball’s legs. Lost in all the existential dread is that DeMar DeRozan is still a pretty darn good basketball player, but the question remains if he offers what the teams in the market for upgrades need.

DeRozan, effective as he is, is still a midrange assassin who seems comically allergic to incorporating the 3-point shot into his diet. Spacing is perhaps the principal need of both the Lakers and 76ers, making it tough for either franchise to pull the trigger on an expensive piece that may fit poorly.

Alex Caruso

Alex Caruso‘s name has been somewhat absent from credible trade rumors, with the Bulls reportedly unwilling to deal the coveted combo guard despite multiple overtures.

But while the Bulls are right to value a smart, high-effort veteran who can capably hit 3s and defends at an all-world level, he’s not a needle-mover on going-nowhere Chicago and could be in another uniform.

With several teams seemingly interested, the Bulls might be smart to drum up a bidding war instead of clutching a prized asset who lacks real purpose for them.

Kyle Kuzma

Your guess is as good as mine just what the Wizards are trying to do at this deadline. Already firmly in the tank race for lottery odds, Washington’s only motivation for moving a rotation player and disturbing the wonderful harmony of awfulness they’ve cultivated is a competitive haul of future assets.

Teams like the Kings and Mavericks — the two franchises seemingly most interested — might be somewhat desperate to make a move in a deep West where the rest of the competition seems to be leveling up. But Kuzma’s on a sneaky-great declining contract that took its biggest hit ($25m) this season, paying Kuz what will be peanuts ($19m) after cap inflation by the deal’s end in 2026-27.

It may take more than those West pseudo-contenders are willing to cough up.
