Details on ‘Celebration of Life for Jim Martz,’ former Miami Herald writer who lived for Canes, tennis – Miami Herald
A date and details have been set for a “Celebration of Life for Jim Martz.”
Longtime Miami Herald readers and fans of the Miami Hurricanes and of tennis take note, because Martz was well-known to all of those groups. He passed away at age 80 on December 30 after suffering a stroke while hospitalized for heart issues.
The celebration will be held on Friday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at Stadium Court of the Frank Veltri Tennis Center, 9101 N.W. 2nd St., Plantation. Those who wish to attend the event are asked to visit the Facebook page of Florida Tennis Magazine and fill out and submit the RSVP form.
Martz was a Herald sports writer from 1970 to 1991, mostly covering Miami Hurricanes football and other UM teams along with tennis. He was a Canes historian who literally wrote the book (five books, actually) on UM sports.
He became the editor of CaneSport magazine and later the CaneSport website after leaving the Herald, and continued involved with those until the end.
He also founded Florida Tennis and led that magazine and website until selling just last summer. Online reaction to his passing included an appreciation from Billie Jean King, who wrote that Martz “dedicated his life to telling our stories.” Martz was a past vice president of the U.S. Tennis Writers Association, and a member of the Miami-Dade County Tennis Hall of Fame who also wrote several books about that sport, too.
