Leonard Country Club opens in February for the first time ever – INFORUM

LEONARD, N.D. — This winter has been a little different. Usually in late February, the outdoor rinks are full and the trails are covered with snowmobiles or cross country skiers, but not this year. Temperatures in the 50s have made it the perfect weather for golf.

The sweet sounds of a striped golf ball are not what we are used to hearing in the middle of winter.

“I love it, can’t ask for a better day. It’s exciting to play in February, even though there is a little snow on the course, it just feels great,” said Amy Elstrom, a golfer from Valley City.

The “little slice of Heaven” in Leonard has officially opened for the season, making the course one of the busiest places in Cass County.

“We put the word out and the phone was ringing off the hook so much we couldn’t even answer it quick enough. Looked at the tee sheet and it filled in and what’s great is a lot of people have never been here before so they get to test out this course for the first time and it’s been awesome,” said Cody Pulczinski a teaching pro and assistant manager.

“It was absolutely wonderful. I could not believe I stepped outside to check how the tee sheet was running and the temperature was just beautiful. I thought it was April. It’s unbelievable,” said co-owner Angie Pulczinski.

The greens may be a little firm, the grass isn’t quite Augusta green, and there may be a puddle here and there, but none of that matters if it means you can golf in February.

“The weather changes a tiny bit, our phone rings off the hook, we all get messages: ‘When will you open it up?’ It doesn’t matter what time of year it is. We’ll get those, and so everybody knows that we will and they love it and we love it, too,” Pulczinski said.

With Wednesday, Feb. 21, being opening day, Leonard Country Club can now say they have been open every single month of a year.

“You know we had that ice storm. So the course was kind of thick with ice. And we were hoping it would melt. And we kept watching it. And we saw the forecast. And our optimism came up and boy, it cleared off in a hurry. And we were good to go,” said co-owner Mike Pulczinski.

The Pulczinskis said if golfers want to play,

book a tee time on their website,

because their phone has been ringing non-stop.

Lake View Golf Course in Detroit Lakes is also opening: Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
