CSUMB serving up soul food for Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, soul food was served at California State University, Monterey Bay’s dining commons on Wednesday. The event was organized by CSUMB’s Black Student’s United, which has been active since 2015. “We are showcasing our culture and what we usually eat in Black households and on special occasions such as birthdays, cookouts, et cetera” Jamie Booth, the president of the Black Students United, said. The menu consisted of collared greens, candied yams, mac and cheese and other food Booth described as soul food staples. Booth said CSUMB’s dining commons has honored Black History Month before, but that this was the first time the university has consulted Black Students United. “It brings back childhood memories, and we want to share that with the larger campus community,” Booth said.
