£11m Leeds United star could leave as club line up agreement – Football League World

Highlights

  • Wober impresses in German Bundesliga, catching the eye of Borussia Mönchengladbach for a permanent deal.
  • The defender has been a standout performer in an underperforming club, showing solid stats and performance.
  • Leeds could cash in on Wober, potentially over £10 million, to strengthen the squad for future success.

Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach want to make their current loan move for Leeds defender Max Wober permanent in the summer.

The fact that one of the Whites’ loanees is showing himself to be a more than solid player in the German first division, whilst Leeds are in the second division of English football, really speaks volumes about the standard at the top of the Championship this season.

Because that loanee has been doing so well, his temporary club are looking to bring him back permanently in the summer.

Mönchengladbach eyeing summer deal for Max Wober

According to Gladbach live, the Bundesliga side are set to make an attempt, in the summer transfer window, to turn Wober’s current temporary move into a permanent one. The Austrian defender joined the German club in the last summer transfer window, and is set to return to Elland Road at the end of the season.

Gladbach Live added that they have made it clear that they will make a move for the 26-year-old when his loan expires. The current deal does not include a loan-to-buy option.

There is an acceptance among those at Mönchengladbach that a deal for the defender would not be cheap. Wober was bought by Leeds in January 2023 for a fee of £11 million, as per Sky Sports. That, combined with his contract with the Whites still having more than three years left on it, will mean that the Championship side won’t want to let Wober go for any less than £11 million.

Max Wober’s time at Mönchengladbach

The Austrian international has been one of the bright sparks in what has been an underperforming team. They are currently 12th in the 18-team league, and are seven points above the relegation play-off spot.

According to Sofascore’s average match rating, Wober has been the club’s best defender in the league in the 2023/24 campaign. The central defender has had problems with injuries, but he has only missed five of the club’s 23 Bundesliga matches this season. In those games, he has scored one goal and provided three assists. The 26-year-old has been the best player in the team for tackles won, interceptions, and clearances per game too, as per Sofascore.

Leeds should be open to Max Wober loan move

Daniel Farke’s side are doing perfectly fine without Wober. They currently sit second in the Championship table, level on points with Ipswich Town, and six points behind the league leaders: Leicester City.

Bringing the Austrian back and reintegrating him into the fold would, of course, add more depth and quality to a defensive unit that is already performing well, but they don’t need to be greedy. They’ve already got Pascal Struijk and Charlie Cresswell tied down to long contracts, and they may well offer a new deal to Liam Cooper, and look at a permanent move for Joe Rodon. Adding Wober to that would be unnecessary, especially if you can get over £10 million for him.

Regardless of whether they get promoted or not, that sort of money would be very helpful for Leeds. They would be able to go and add further depth to the squad, either to try and survive in the Premier League, or to make another strong push for promotion from the Championship.

Unless Wober comes back to Elland Road in the summer and really wows Farke in pre-season training, keeping him around would feel like overkill, especially when there’s a good chance to earn money from him.
