Gardner-Webb Men’s Tennis Defeats Visiting Wofford 5-2 to Improve to 12-2 – Gardner-Webb University Athletics


Boiling Springs, N.C.—- For the third-consecutive day, the Gardner-Webb men’s tennis team took care of business at the Webb Tennis Center as the Runnin’ Bulldogs defeated visiting Wofford College, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb improved to 12-2 on the season. Wofford, who plays in the Southern Conference, falls to 6-6.

In the double’s competition, the ‘Dawgs No.1 tandem of senior Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and senior Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) once again got things rolling in doubles with a victory over Will Fullett and Robbie Young, 6-2 . 

At No.3 doubles, the Dawgs duo of senior John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla.) and junior Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) knocked off Wofford’s Ian Rasheed and Ashe Ray, 6-2 to clinch the doubles point for the home team.     
             
Numa Lemieux-Monette (Montral, Canada) and freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) did not finish their doubles match on Court No.2.

Gardner-Webb held a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

In the singles competition, Gardner-Webb won on courts one, three and two to secure the match.

Dias, who improved to 12-0 in singles play, beat Max Graham on Court No.1, 6-2, 6-1, to get things rolling.

Lemieux-Monette won on Court No.3, 6-3, 6-3 over Fullett.

Lepine (Montreal, Canada) continued his outstanding play on Court No.2, winning 6-4, 6-3, over Ray to secure the match for Gardner-Webb.

Terblanche won 6-3, 6-4 over Kostas Alex Horn Court No.6 to continue the Runnin’ Bulldogs roll.

On Court No.4, junior Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany), lost in three sets to Young, 6-2, 4-6, 6-10 while on Court No.5, Chrisjan Van Wyk also lost in three sets 6-7 (9), 6-2, 6-10 over Jack Deveney.

“I am very proud of the team,” said Gardner-Webb head tennis coach Mike Griffith. “To play three straight days and to go 3-0 is something very few teams in the country can do.”

Up Next — Gardner-Webb will have 11 days off before the Runnin’ Bulldogs travel to the Halton-Wagner Complex to take on No.56 ranked Charlotte on Sunday (3/17) at noon.
