Third time lucky for Freiburg against West Ham? – Bundesliga
Freiburg will look to take a lead to London as they host West Ham United in their UEFA Europa League first leg at the Europa-Park Stadion.
Latest
It’s now six league games without a win for Freiburg, but their latest outing saw them claim an excellent point by holding reigning champions Bayern Munich to a 2-2 draw. Christian Günter had given Christian Streich’s side an early lead before Bayern hit back twice, but Freiburg again showed their spirit as Lucas Höler’s 87th-minute beauty secured a point. Freiburg appear to be fond of the dramatic at the moment, their latest effort coming just a week on from more late heroics as they advanced to this stage of the Europa League. Trailing Lens 2-0, Roland Sallai struck twice – the second of which came in injury time – before Michael Gregoritsch wrapped up victory in extra time of their second leg of the previous round. With the Bayern game coming six days before the visit of West Ham, Streich should be able to avoid heavy rotation, while Lukas Kübler might have just enough time to get back to fitness after missing Matchday 24. Yannik Keitel, meanwhile, was back on the bench against Bayern and is now in contention after injury.
UEFA Europa Conference League holders West Ham struggled at the start of 2024, failing to win any of their opening eight matches in all competitions. However, they have bounced back in recent weeks, picking up conseuctive victories over Brentford and Everton in the English Premier League and scoring seven goals in the process. Finishing top of their group, which also contained Freiburg, meant they avoided a play-off fixture, so they have had extra time to prepare for this one. Besides Maxwel Cornet, whose hamstring issue is expected to keep him out until the end of March, David Moyes has a full squad to choose from. Jarrod Bowen is undoubtedly his side’s danger man – the England international has 17 goals in all competitions, including 14 in the league – but Lucas Paquetá and Mohamed Kudus are also players Streich and Co. will need to keep an eye on.
