Women’s Tennis End Spring Break Trip in Florida With 7-0 Sweep of Saint Joseph’s – Creighton University Athletics


ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women’s tennis team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with a 7-0 sweep of Saint Joseph’s on Thursday morning at the USTA National Campus. The Bluejays ended the week with a 3-1 record, posting wins over Cedarville and Seton Hall. 
 
With the sweep, Creighton improved to 8-5 on the year, while the Hawks fell to 2-7 overall. 
 
The Bluejays did not drop a game during the top two doubles matches, cruising to an early 1-0 lead. Senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin posted a dominant 6-0 win, earning their fifth consecutive victory at the top doubles position. Sophomore Annika Elvestrom and junior Siri Kongara also captured a 6-0 win at the No. 2 doubles position to clinch the first point of the match. 
 
Creighton continued its dominate performance into singles action as the Bluejays claimed straight-set victories at all six singles position to clinch the sweep. 
 
Shukla secured her 115th win of her Bluejay career with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set win at the top singles spot, jumping pass Ashley Ishimura for the fifth-most wins by a Bluejays in program history. 
 
Negin recorded a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at the No. 2 slot, while senior Bianca Rademacher surrendered only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 straight-sets victory at the No. 3 singles position. Kongara then claimed a 6-4, 6-3 straight-sets win at the No. 4 singles spot, while Elvestrom continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No. 5 singles court. 
 
Junior Allison Wilcox closed the match with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at the No. 6 singles position to capture the Bluejays second clean sweep of the season.
 
“I really enjoyed seeing the team come out with good energy and focus after a tough conference loss yesterday,” said head coach Tom Lilly. “We responded well and are continuing to get better and hopefully healthier.”
 
The Bluejays will take the next two weeks off before travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to battle Marquette in a BIG EAST match on Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
