Strong week for Daiyang Metal (KRX:009190) shareholders doesn’t alleviate pain of five-year loss – simplywall.st

It is doubtless a positive to see that the Daiyang Metal Co., Ltd. (KRX:009190) share price has gained some 47% in the last three months. But that can’t change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. The share price has failed to impress anyone , down a sizable 63% during that time. So we’re not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.

On a more encouraging note the company has added ₩9.1b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let’s see if we can determine what’s driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it’s a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over five years Daiyang Metal’s earnings per share dropped significantly, falling to a loss, with the share price also lower. At present it’s hard to make valid comparisons between EPS and the share price. However, we can say we’d expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 14% in the last year, Daiyang Metal shareholders lost 45%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year’s performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 10% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should “buy when there is blood on the streets”, but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
