New Delhi: Harry Kane smashed a hat-trick as Bayern Munich hammered Mainz 8-1 on Saturday at the Allianz Arena in Munich. With this, he has now become the first player to score four hat-tricks in a debut season in the Bundesliga, and Bayern’s hopes of catching leaders Bayer Leverkusen are well alive. Kane, who also laid two assists, took his tally to 30 goals out of 25 Bundesliga games.

He also equalled a 60-year-old record with this as German legend Uwe Seeler in a maiden campaign was up to the same exploits for Hamburg in 1963-64. Bayern still have nine more games to play and the English captain has drawn closer to the 41-goals season record set by Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski in 2020-21. It was Bayern’s biggest win this season and will sit just behind their 8-0 decimation of Darmstadt in October last year.

Besides Kane’s hat-trick, midfielder Leon Goretzka scored a brace with Thomas Mueller, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry making their entries as well. It was Kane with the opener as he tapped in a pass by Musiala after 13 minutes to deliver his side an early lead. Just seven minutes later, Kane had a header saved but Goretzka knocked in the rebound.

The sole silver lining for Mainz was Nadiem Amiri’s incredible free kick through Bayern’s defence in the 31st minute but Kane restored Bayern’s lead in first-half stoppage time. He collected a lofted pass from Goretzka and blasted it into the net. Mueller scored the fourth one for Bayern breaking Mainz’s resistance early in the second half following which Bayern ran riot with further goals to Musiala, Gnabry, Kane, and Goretzka.

Where do both sit in the table?

The crushing defeat leaves Mainz second last, nine points from safety. Bayern are now just seven points behind Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen who will be hosting a lowly Wolfsburg on Sunday. Bayern were direct and quite decisive against Mainz, having already sealed their path to the Champions League quarters on Tuesday with a 3-0 home win over Lazio.
