Women’s tennis drops 5-2 battle against Lipscomb – FGCU Athletics

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s tennis team dropped its Atlantic Sun Conference home opener against Lipscomb University with a 5-2 decision Monday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

“Today was a match Lipscomb competed hard and pushed the team,” said FGCU head women’s tennis coach Courtney Vernon. “We will grow a lot from today and look forward to our next match on Sunday.”

The Green & Blue (7-7, 2-1 ASUN) lost the doubles point to begin the day but Ida Ferding evened the score with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 win on court No. 5.

The Bisons (9-2, 1-0 ASUN) retook the lead when Jordana Ossa fell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 and Paloma Goldsmith dropped her match with a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court No. 4

Amelia Kopel brought the Eagles back into the match after being down 5-0 to produce an impressive 7-5, 6-4 win on court No. 6.

Kopel’s win meant that the Green & Blue still had a chance for victory but it solely depended on the remaining two matches.

Isabella Colmenares rallied through three sets but ultimately fell 6-1, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2.

Fanny Norin forced a third set but dropped the final match of the day with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 defeat by Sasha Dobranos.

The Eagles will return to action Sunday, hosting the University of North Alabama at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
