The Hope College women’s tennis team is back in the win column after a two-win day at the USTA Training Center.
On the final day of the team’s spring break trip, the Flying Dutch took home a 9-0 win over Transylvania University, and a 6-3 win over Edgewood College on Thursday.
The doubles units started things off strong against Transylvania, sweeping the the competition to jump ahead 3-0 heading into singles play.
At first doubles, Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) took home the 8-4 win.
No. 2 doubles pairing senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and Junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) were victorious, 8-4, as well.
At third doubles, freshmen Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) finished out the sweep with an 8-5 win.
Hope kept their momentum in singles play, grabbing wins in flights one through six, all in straight sets.
At first singles Lopykinski won 6-4, 6-2, while Moran topped her Transylvania opponent 6-1, 6-1, in the second flight.
Weeber won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Coffey delivered a 6-3, 6-1 victory in No. 4 singles.
Wei was successful at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Walker picked up the win at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Against Edgewood, the doubles squad proved to be victorious again, giving Hope the slight edge before singles action.
The team of Lopykinski and Moran battled for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Both Weeber and Coffey and No. 2 doubles and Walker and Wei at No. 3 doubles came away with 8-4 victories.
Moran took on the No. 1 singles flight with dominating play, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Weeber clinched the match win playing No. 2 doubles, with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Sophomore Hope Rhoades (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) collected a win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Kamryn Dumas (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) forced a tiebreaker in the second set at No. 6 singles, with Edgewood coming away with the 6-4, 7-6 (2) win.
Hope returns from the Sunshine state with a 3-2 record, and begins MIAA play on Thursday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at Alma College.
