Toledo woman dealing with tattoo nightmare says skin is burning, peeling off – WTVG

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – New ink can be fun and exciting but for Alicia Jaquillard, the tattoo she got on March 7th was a nightmare.

“It hurts, it stings, and it burns,” said Jaquillard. “It just started like peeling away.”

She says she got it done by Tomas Delagarza at Meraki in Toledo.

It looked fine immediately after the appointment, but two days later, she found herself in the emergency room suffering from an infection.

“They said it was cellulitis of the hand,” Jaquillard said.

She reported everything to the Lucas County Health Department.

A spokesperson tells us in an email:

Received a complaint on 3/12/24. Complainant stated they received the tattoo on 3/6/24 and had concerns of the facility being licensed. License for facility was issued 3/5/24. They also stated that three days the tattoo was badly swollen. They was admitted to the emergency department and had a diagnosis of cellulitis. They stated that the artist was Thomas Del Garza. There were no client consent forms for the last five months for Thomas Del Garza so ink color, lot, manufacturer were not able to be confirmed specific to the client . Thomas is no longer an active employee at this location and inks, and needles being expired or involved in a recall was not able to be confirmed at time of inspection.

There is a new doorway near the entrance of the facility that connects the nail salon to the body art facility. Highly recommend reaching out to Toledo building and attaining an updated certificate of occupancy. There is also a new booth near the front of the shop that should be on an updated facility floor plan. Also required to resubmit for plan review for altering number of entrance’s and floor material in the rest-room.

Remove needles and inks that are expired and used for training from Buffy’s procedure area.

Recommend removing green fabric chair from the procedure area on the left side of the facility.

Jaquillard posted her experience on social media and soon realized, she may not be the only one dealing with a botched tattoo from Delagarza. Star Lopez says she also got her hand done by him two days after Jaquillard, on March 9th.

“This one and this one started bubbling up fast. My skin’s falling off with the ink with it, like chunks of it,” said Lopez.

“It seemed like ours were the same situation,” Jaquillard said.

We could not make contact with Delagarza, but we were able to sit down with the owner of Meraki, Buffy Costell.

“He has been here over a year, he has done great tattoos, you know, he has done some that aren’t so great, like we all do,” said Costell. “You have to follow the rules, you have to fill out the paperwork the right way, you have to follow the health department standards and he didn’t do that, so, I had to let him go.”

Costell says she is doing everything she can to make things right, even offering to pay for Jaquillard’s cover-up.

“It’s unfair that she had to deal with this and that she got a really bad tattoo, and unfortunately I’m dealing with the repercussions,” Costell said.

Jaquillard still does not know if she will be able to get her hand covered by another tattoo.

“Just make sure you for sure know that artist because other than that, if you do something like this, this is exactly what can happen,” said Jaquillard.
