A-State tennis picks up two wins on the road – KAIT

The Arkansas State women’s tennis team picked up wins against ULM and Jackson State Saturday.

A-State (7-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) opened the day with a 4-0 sweep of ULM (1-8, 0-2 Sun Belt). The Red Wolves earned the doubles point with Nejla Zukic and Rebecca Brody earning a 6-0 decision on court one and Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard winning on court one 6-2.

Brody increased the A-State lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Raquel Alvaro on court five. Millard defeated Tamara Bachmann 6-1, 6-2 to make it 3-0 and Ariadna Fernandez clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory on court six against Mackenzie King. It marked the first Sun Belt Conference road win for A-State since a 4-3 win over Texas State back on March 21, 2021.

In the non-conference finale, A-State took the hard-fought doubles point via tiebreak on court two. Humbert and Millard picked up a 6-3 decision on court one, but Zukic and Brody came up short 6-3 on court three. Anna Grigoreva and Abigail Thurmer were locked in a tiebreak on court two and came way with the 7-5 decision to clinch the point.

Grigoreva cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win on court two in singles to give A-State a 2-0 lead, but Jackson State (9-5) evened up the score with wins on court one and court six. Brody gave the Red Wolves a 3-2 lead with a 7-5, 6-4 win on court four and Millard clinched the match on court three 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). The win over Jackson State gave A-State its seventh victory of the season, most for any A-State team since the 2012 squad finished with 11.

A-State returns home for four-straight home matches beginning March 23 against Marshall for International Student Brunch at the A-State Tennis Courts. The Red Wolves host Appalachian State on Sunday, March 24 ahead of a Thursday, March 28 contest against Old Dominion. A-State closes out the homestand with A-State Tennis Family Fun Fest against James Madison on Saturday, March 30.
