TxDOT gives updates on local bridge projects – ConchoValleyHomepage.com

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Texas Department of Transportation has given updates on three major bridge projects dotting Tom Green County.

Lake Nasworthy Bridge

According to TxDOT, a contractor “performed night work on the bridge substructure (mainly painting) the week of March 4.” The contractor began working on the bridge’s deck expansion joints during the following week and now expects to flip traffic to start work on the other side on March 21-22.

“We anticipate this work will be completed by April and to have the bridge deck opened back up with no lane closures,” TxDOT said. “Remaining work on the project is all substructure work that may require one lane to be closed here and there, but no major closures are anticipated once the expansion joints are completed.”

Main Street Bridge

Meanwhile, the Main Street bridge is seeing speedy progress toward a completion date set before the arrival of the rodeo in April. TxDOT stated that “both remaining beam repairs are nearing completion” and that “concrete repair material has been fully applied.”

All that’s left now is to apply carbon fiber reinforcement material, paint and clean up. Once this is done, the freeway can be reopened.

“The freeway will be reopened prior to the rodeo being in town,” TxDOT said.

Oakes Street Bridge

When it comes to the Oakes Street bridge, many San Angelo drivers might be wondering where all of the work is being done. Wonder no more, though, as TxDOT assures that progress has been made on the bridge — it’s just not visible.

“Most of the work being completed has been substructure work and not visible by the public,” TxDOT said. “All ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been applied to the damaged areas, with the largest remaining work being an asphalt transition slab on the northern approach.”

All the bridge needs to reopen is the transition slab to be completed and striped. This took time, as the “UHPC repairs required the bridge to be lifted and remain in that position until the concrete had reached at least a 4-day cure,” according to TxDOT.

A contractor is on-site on March 18 to remove the jacks that were used to lift the bridge. However, though there are only a few minor items left to tackle that don’t require to bridge to remain closed, TxDOT said there are still some factors barring the organization from announcing a conclusive completion date.

“With the small quantity of hot mix left and weather conditions recently, an estimated completion time is difficult to announce at this time,” TxDOT said.
