Gardner-Webb Men’s Tennis Improves to 15-3 with 6-1 Victory at UNC Greensboro – Gardner-Webb University Athletics


GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men’s tennis team continued its magical spring on Saturday (3/23) afternoon as the Runnin’ Bulldogs defeated host UNC Greensboro (UNCG), 6-1, at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

Gardner-Webb won the doubles point on courts one and three to take a 1-0 lead. The Dawgs then claimed the first three singles matches to win their third match in five days and improve to 15-3 overall. 

UNCG, which competes in the Southern Conference, fell to 4-11 with the loss.

In the double’s competition, the ‘Runnin’ Bulldogs No.1 tandem of senior Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and senior Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) started the day with a 6-4 doubles victory over the Spartans David Flisberg and Christopher Johns.

At No.3 doubles, the Dawgs duo of senior John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla.) and junior Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) battled John Gabelic and Hampus Johannson to a  7-6 win.  

In the singles competition, Dias continued his dominance at No.1 singles as he defeated Tymofiy Khrystyuk (6-4, 6-2) to improve to 17-0 on the season.  

At singles No.3, junior Numa Lemieux-Monette (Montral, Canada) prevailed over the Spartans Tejas Wall, 6-2, 6-4.

Chrisjan Van Wyk won (6-3, 6-1) clinched the match for the Dawgs at singles No.5 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Luke Thomson.

Junior Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany) won in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 1-0) at singles No.4 over Gabelic to continue the Gardner-Webb roll through the match.

 The other Runnin’ Bulldogs singles winner vs the Spartans was freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia), who also won in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 1-0) over Andrew Black at No.6 singles.

The Dawgs nearly ran the table, but junior Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) lost to Flisberg (4-6, 4-6) at singles No.2.     

“We did well to continue the momentum from a tough, hard-fought doubles point against a dangerous team,” said Gardner-Webb assistant tennis coach Sebastion Harris, who is in hist first year on the Gardner-Webb coaching staff following a five-season playing career with the Runnin’ Bulldogs. “We’re looking forward to our senior day on Wednesday (3/27) against Radford.”

Up Next — Gardner-Webb will be back in Boiling Springs this Wednesday (3/27) for a Senior Day match at the Webb Tennis Center against Big South foe Radford at 2:30 PM.
