It took two full matches and one suspended match, but the Bret Harte High School tennis team finally got into the win column.

Nearly 24 hours after their home match with Argonaut was suspended before its conclusion because of weather, the Bullfrogs captured their first win of the season by beating the Sonora Wildcats 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at Columbia College in Sonora. The suspended match against Argonaut will be finished when the two teams meet again on April 16 in Jackson.

Although this was Bret Harte’s first win of the season, first-year head coach Jason Burita feels that his team has been competitive in all their previous matches, and he was certain that the victories would come.

“I am proud of all the athletes,” Burita said. “They have put the work in to get better, and it shows.”

Bret Harte captured victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 girls’ matches, the No. 2 boys’ match, the No. 1 boys’ doubles match, the No. 2 girls’ doubles match, and the mixed doubles match.

“We performed well today, especially when we had setbacks,” Burita said. “If we dropped a couple of games, we rallied back, regained the lead, and put them away. We also seemed less nervous and played with more confidence. Hannah (Dillashaw) and Lola (Carona) won their first varsity match of their young career in a super tiebreaker. Lola stepped up her volley game at the end and hit some really nice shots to help win the tiebreaker.”

In the No. 1 boys’ match, sophomore Jonathan Carter lost 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 2 boys’ match, senior Jacob Hibdon collected his first victory of the season by winning 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 1 girls’ match, senior Jamee Zahniser won 6-1, 7-5. And in the No. 2 girls’ match, junior Olivia Burke won 6-1, 6-4.

When asked about her victory, Zahniser said, “This game was definitely a good matchup. We had lots of long rallies. But most of all, I just had a lot of fun today. Plus, good weather made the game more enjoyable.”

Bret Harte’s No. 1 boys’ doubles team of Brody Burita and Zach Burke won 6-4, 6-3 for their first victory of the season.

“It feels really relieving to finally get a win under our belts,” Brody Burita said. “Zach really showed up to play and win today and honestly, we couldn’t have done it without him. Bret Harte tennis seems ready to use this momentum and now that we have a team win, we’re hungry for more.”

In the No. 2 boys’ doubles match, Bret Harte’s Colby Ogren and Eliot Burita lost 6-0, 6-2. Bret Harte’s No. 1 girls’ doubles team of Yarely Muñoz and Melanie Barraza lost 6-4, 5-1. In the No. 2 girls’ doubles match, Bret Harte’s Dillashaw and Carona won 3-6, 6-4 (10-4). And in the mixed doubles match, Nekos Lagomarsino and Haley Hayden won by forfeit.

Bret Harte (1-2 Mother Lode League) will return to the courts to take on the Calaveras Red Hawks at 3:30 p.m. on April 3 in Angels Camp.

“This is game one of our winning streak,” Burita said. “We plan on stringing some together.”
