WOMEN’S TENNIS CLOSES OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER STONEHILL – Le Moyne College Athletics


DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women’s tennis team closed out its regular season with a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast Conference action on Thursday afternoon at Elevate Fitness.

The Dolphins earned the point in the doubles competition for the second straight match. Freshman Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) and junior Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) moved to 3-2 in NEC play with a 6-1 victory over Alice Brito Do Rio and Jenna Gustafson at the second spot. Sophomore Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and graduate student Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) clinched the point with a 6-4 win at the third position over Madison Warren and Camila Zuluaga. Freshman Lilia Raiss (Temara, Morocco/Descartes) and sophomore Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) were leading Julie Holte and Anneliese Beltran, 5-4, at the top spot when the point was clinched.
 
Le Moyne was victorious at four of the six spots in the singles competition. Holte tied the match at one apiece with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top spot over Raiss. Fernando regained the lead for the Dolphins with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Beltran at the third position. Warren knotted the score again by knocking off sophomore Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) at the second spot, 6-1, 7-5. Alvarez put her team in front for good with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the fourth position over Brito Do Rio. Simeonova was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at the sixth spot over Lindsay MacDonald. Barona closed out the match with a 0-6, 6-3, 13-11 victory at the fifth position over Zuluaga.
 
Le Moyne (6-8, 4-2 NEC) opens play at the NEC Championships on Friday, April 12 at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
