The main man looks to break his own record in Sao Paulo, as world champion Max Verstappen is looking to literally race to the end of the season. Last Sunday, the Dutchman broke his own single-season wins record, picking up his 16th checkered flag in Mexico City, giving Verstappen four-straight wins. The three-peat champ has failed to win just three times this season, only missing the podium in Singapore last month. He is a favorite to win in Brazil, though he has not been been victorious at Interlagos since 2019.
His team, Red Bull Racing, has already clinched a second consecutive constructor’s championship, though it has mainly been due to Verstappen’s performance. Since winning two of the first four races of the season, Sergio Perez has made mistake after mistake, costing him podiums and points. In his home race last week, the Mexican-born driver’s dash heading into the opening corner ended up with him colliding with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, causing him to retire early.
The battle for spots in the constructor’s championship has picked up thanks to the massive collapse from Aston Martin. Mercedes is trying to hold off Ferrari for second place, with 22 points separating the two teams heading into Sunday. McLaren, who had a rough beginning to 2023, have picked up the pace to move into four, 20 ahead of Aston Martin. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been outstanding in recent weeks, including Norris who went from 17th to fifth place in Mexico.
Three of the last four events held in Sao Paulo have been won by Mercedes, as Lewis Hamilton has won twice over that span, while George Russell won a Grand Prix for the first time in Brazil last season.
