After watching Brett Maher struggle immensely during the 2023 NFL playoffs, the Cowboys decided that they needed a new kicker. They got bold when choosing their successor to Maher.
Rather than target an established NFL kicker, the Cowboys signed Brandon Aubrey out of the USFL. Aubrey was a good-looking prospect, as he had a strong leg and had been among the USFL’s best and most accurate kickers during its first two seasons.
But Aubrey didn’t have any NFL experience when Dallas signed him. In fact, he hadn’t even played football in college; he played soccer during his days at Notre Dame. So, if Aubrey and Tristan Vizcaino didn’t work out, the Cowboys would have had to scramble to find a solution.
However, Aubrey quickly proved that he does belong in the NFL. He has looked great during his rookie season and has already broken the NFL’s record for consecutive field-goal makes to begin his career.

Below is a breakdown of Aubrey’s stats as he looks to add to his record during the final third of the 2023 season.
Brandon Aubrey record for consecutive field goals
Brandon Aubrey has made the first 21 field goals of his NFL career entering the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day game. His streak is still active entering Week 12 of the 2023 NFL season though he has missed two of his extra-point attempts.
Most consecutive field goals to start NFL career
Aubrey’s 21 consecutive field-goal makes to start his career are the most in NFL history. The previous record had belonged to former Browns kicker Travis Coons, who made the first 18 field goals of his career in 2015.
Below is a look at where Aubrey stands among the record-holders as his streak remains active.
Player | Team | Year | Consecutive makes |
Brandon Aubrey | Cowboys | 2023 | 21* |
Travis Coons | Browns | 2015 | 18 |
Chandler Catanzaro | Cardinals | 2014 | 17 |
Kai Forbath | Washington | 2012 | 17 |
Austin Seibert | Browns | 2019 | 16 |
Garrett Hartley | Saints | 2008-09 | 16 |
* Streak still active.
Aubrey’s consistency has certainly been impressive, especially considering that he is only in his third year of playing football. Aubrey played soccer at Notre Dame during his college days before pursuing a career in MLS.
Aubrey was drafted into MLS but didn’t have staying power. He then pivoted his career focus toward being a kicker and got a chance to play for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL. He was the league’s best kicker during its 2022 and 2023 seasons before he made the jump to the NFL level with the Cowboys.
