Central splits men’s tennis matches in Illinois – Central College
BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS — Picking up its first dual win of the season, the Central College men’s tennis eked out a 5-4 win over Greenville University (Ill.) Saturday morning.
The Dutch (1-7) were edged by Illinois Wesleyan University 5-4 on Friday night.
Against Greenville, AJ Wilkins (junior, Grinnell) was kryptonite for the Panthers. He outlasted Clark Kent 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-8 for a No. 2 singles win. Wilkins and Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Pella, Pella Christian HS) won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee and Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) also won in doubles, taking an 8-5 decision in the No. 2 slot. Slaymaker added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
With the match tied at 4-4, Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) cinched the win with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 5 singles.
Fletcher and Slaymaker won their No. 2 doubles match against the Titans 8-6. Slaymaker went undefeated on the trip with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Fletcher was ahead 6-4, 5-5 in his No. 1 singles match before his opponent retired due to illness. Marcon rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 12-10 win at No. 3 singles.
Central’s roster will be back together Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. match at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.
