Michael Thomas placed on IR, Chris Olave must step up for Saints – Marca

New Orleans Saints star wide receiver Michael Thomas finds himself on the injured reserve list, marking yet another chapter in his ongoing battle with injuries.

Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowler, sustained a knee injury during the Saints’ Week 10 clash against the Minnesota Vikings.

The news was confirmed by general manager Mickey Loomis, who also disclosed that Thomas would miss at least the next four games of the 2023 season.

This setback comes on the heels of a challenging few seasons for Thomas, having played in just 10 of the last 40 games due to various ailments ranging from hamstring issues to a pedal toe dislocation.

Furthermore, off-field challenges surfaced as Thomas was recently arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of simple battery and criminal mischief following an altercation with construction workers.

Thomas’ contributions have been significant

Despite no longer holding the elite status he once enjoyed as the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2019, Thomas’ absence will undoubtedly impact the Saints’ offensive dynamics.

In the 10 games he played this season, he contributed significantly with 39 receptions, 448 yards, and one touchdown.

However, with the torch now passed to Chris Olave, who has assumed the role of the team’s primary receiver, the Saints look to adapt and capitalize on this shift in the lineup.

Chris Olave’s time to shine

Chris Olave, in his second year, has faced a roller coaster season, showcasing early promise in the initial three games, followed by a relative dip in performance against formidable opponents like the Bucs and Patriots.

However, Olave rebounded with an impressive display against the Texans and Jaguars, amassing 14 receptions for 153 yards in a single game.

The young receiver’s journey took an unexpected turn when he faced legal troubles, including an arrest for speeding.

Addressing the media, Olave acknowledged his recent struggles but emphasized the resilience required to overcome adversity.

He expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back, setting high standards for himself and acknowledging that one outstanding performance could be the catalyst for his resurgence.

With Michael Thomas sidelined, the spotlight now firmly rests on Chris Olave to step up and fill the void.

The absence of one of the Saints’ top offensive weapons creates a tremendous opportunity for Olave to showcase his skills and contribute significantly to the team’s success.
